This preliminary survey aims to investigate the British colonial administration's historical connections with the Nilgiris and the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu between 1850 and 1970.
The objective of the project is to digitally document, in a systematic way, the rich cultural heritage of drawings & paintings of British soldier-artists, old photographs of tribes and their habitations, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the Madras Presidency Monumental collections, handwritten documents of the Planters' Association (formation and proceedings), vintage portraits of tea estate bungalows, royal family portraits, documents of early 20th century schools, churches and institutions. The collections consist of drawings, paintings, photographic negatives and prints, hand written documents etc.
In the pilot project, it is proposed to digitize around 3000 images from the collections and to identify the endangered documents through an intensive survey.
