Project Description

The KARANAGAMA, a voluminous text belonging to the Saivasiddhanta Agama corpus, is an authoritative canonical text, of which IFP possesses many manuscripts in its collection. It is one of the oft-consulted text of authority for the plan and construction of the Siva-temple, for the various rites of installation, worship, and festivals inside the temple.

The proposed critically edited text will be of great help in knowing the minute details of the ‘Saiva religion centred around the temple’ as it was practised in the ancient period.

Materials and methods

IFP manuscripts collection, one of the most complete in the field of Saivasiddhanta texts, is the basic source material for all projects dealing with Saiva canonical texts. Manuscripts belonging to other collections will also be utilised for this project.

Main (expected) outputs

Critically edited text accompanied by a detailed introduction, summary of chapters, etc. in the form of a book (in 3 vols.) to be published.
