This book presents a brief overview of Pondicherry's social and political history from its origins to the merger of the territory with the Indian Union, and beyond. It has three parts: the first relates to the arrival and establishment of the French. It deals with the vicissitudes of their presence here and the way they organised the administration of this Indian region according to their norms. The second part deals with the impact of the French presence on the social body and the legal system. The third is devoted to the manner in which the French left and what remains of their influence. The book does not dwell on historical details of military feats etc; the focus is rather on the socio-political realities which have still something to teach us.  Having been in the service of the Pondicherry Government during the years after the merger, the author has lived some of the events, been associated with some others and has been called upon to play a leading role in still others. This personal knowledge is perhaps the distinctive feature of this book as compared to other books on the subject.

Born and brought up in Pondicherry, David Annoussamy received his education in the French medium and went on to obtain the degrees of Licence ès Lettres and Docteur en Droit in France. He worked under the French Administration in Pondicherry until the Territory's transfer to India and then under the Indian Government. Some of the most important posts he held were: Director of the Pedagogic Centre, Director of Legal Studies and Judge of the Madras High Court. David Annoussamy has authored several books and articles in French, English and Tamil, on subjects ranging from law and history to Tamil culture and literature.

Ce livre présente un bref aperçu de l'histoire sociale et politique de Pondichéry, depuis ses origines jusqu'à l'intégration du territoire avec l'Union indienne, et au-delà. Il comporte trois parties : la première concerne l'arrivée et l'établissement des Français. Elle traite des vicissitudes de leur présence ici et de la façon dont ils ont organisé l'administration de cette région indienne selon leurs normes. La deuxième partie traite de l'impact de la présence française sur le corps social et le système juridique. La troisième est consacrée à la manière dont les Français sont partis et à ce qui reste de leur influence. Le livre ne s'attarde pas sur les détails historiques des exploits militaires, etc. ; l'accent est plutôt mis sur les réalités sociopolitiques qui ont encore quelque chose à nous apprendre.  Ayant été au service du gouvernement de Pondichéry pendant les années qui ont suivi l'intégration, l'auteur a vécu certains des événements, a été associé à certains autres et a été appelé à jouer un rôle de premier plan dans d'autres encore. Cette connaissance personnelle est peut-être le trait distinctif de ce livre par rapport à d'autres ouvrages sur le sujet.
