Water resources and their uses and management are - worldwide and on the regional scale of South Asia - one of the main concerns of the environmental and social equilibrium of the new century. These proceedings therefore contribute to the efforts of Indo-French and Sri Lankan-French cooperation to develop scientific collaboration on water management. The contributions by Indian, Sri Lankan and French specialists in the social sciences – historians, economists, sociologists, anthropologists, geographers – as well as specialists in agronomy, soil sciences or forestry, offer critical approaches and data from various disciplines regarding the understanding of water availability and water uses and management in South India and Sri Lanka, along with themes that emerge from these considerations.

Les ressources en eau, leur utilisation et leur gestion sont – au niveau mondial et à l’échelle régionale de l’Asie du Sud – un des points les plus importants concernant les équilibres environnemental et social de ce nouveau siècle. Ces travaux contribuent aux efforts de collaboration franco-indienne et franco-sri-lankaise pour développer une collaboration scientifique sur l’utilisation de l’eau. La contribution de spécialistes indiens, sri-lankais et français en sciences sociales: historiens, économistes, sociologues, anthropologues, géographes, ainsi que des spécialistes en agronomie, sciences du sol ou des forêts, offre une approche et des données critiques venant de différentes disciplines. Cet ouvrage permet de comprendre les problèmes relatifs à la disponibilité en eau, ainsi que ses utilisations et sa gestion en Inde du Sud et au Sri Lanka.
