The Western Ghats, the Great Escarpment of the Indian Subcontinent, stretch parallel to the west coast of India over nearly 1600 km from Kanyakumari (8°N) to Tapti valley in Gujarat (21 °N). They are considered one of the biodiversity hotspots in the world, and yet harbour significant forest cover, characterized by invaluable endemic flora and fauna. harbour significant forest cover, characterized by invaluable endemic flora and fauna. The "Forest Map of South India Project" covers the central and southern parts of the Western Ghats (from Goa to Kanyakumari). The area is covered in six maps at 1:250,000 scale. Following an ecological classification system that considers floristic composition, physiognomy and phenology, the natural vegetation is depicted along bioclimatic gradients and disturbance regimes. These maps were prepared in collaboration with the Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu Forest Departments. 1) Belgaum-Dharwar-Panaji: The extent is between 14°30 and 16° Latitude North and between 73°30 and 75°30 Longitude East. Map covers northern western part of Karnataka, Goa, as well as a small part of Maharashtra north of Goa. 2) Shimoga: The Shimoga map lies between 13° and 14°30 Latitude North and 74°15 to 76°45 Latitude East. The map covers the central western part of Karnataka. 3) Mercara-Mysore: The map includes the area between 11°30 and 13° Latitude North and between 74°45 and 76°45 Longitude East, covering the southwestern part of Karnataka and the northern part of Kerala. It is bounded by the Shimoga map on the north, the Bangalore map on the east and the Coimbatore-Thrissur map in the south.

Cette zone est considérée comme l’un des points chauds de biodiversité dans le monde, et abrite d’importantes étendues forestières, caractérisées par d’inestimables faunes et flores endémiques. Le « projet des cartes de végétation de l’Inde » couvre les parties centrales et Sud des Ghâts occidentaux (de Goa à Kanyakumari). La zone est couverte par six cartes à l’échelle 1:250 000. Suivant un système de classification écologique qui considère la composition floristique, physionomie et phénologie, la végétation naturelle est dépeinte au travers des gradients bioclimatiques et de l’étendue des perturbations. Ces cartes ont été préparées en collaboration avec les Départements Forestiers du Karnataka, du Kerala et du Tamil Nadu. 1) Belgaum-Dharwar-Panaji: la carte s’étend entre 14°30 et 16° de latitude nord et entre 73°30 et 75°30 de longitude est. Elle couvre la partie nord-ouest du Karnataka, Goa, ainsi qu’une petite partie du Maharastra au nord de Goa. 2) Shimoga: la carte de Shimoga couvre la zone entre 13° et 14°30 de latitude nord et 74°15 à 76°45 de longitude est.
