This book puts into context the “charms” of the Atharva Veda, an ancient ritual tradition originating in the northwestern area of the Indian subcontinent, through a critical examination of ideas frequently encountered in studies of this Veda, in particular the usage of the label “magic” as well as of the notions of poetry and performativity. This introductory study is followed by the critical edition and translation into English and French of the forty hymns of book 3 of the Paippalādasaṁhitā of the Atharva Veda, along with a detailed commentary in French for each hymn. This book will interest not only sanskritists and scholars of South Asia but also linguists, ethnolinguists and anthropologists.

Carmen S. Spiers is Junior Professor of Sanskrit at Aix-Marseille Université as well as member of the research laboratories TDMAM (Aix) and GREI (Paris). During and after her doctoral work resulting in a PhD awarded by the École pratique des Hautes Études of Paris in 2020, she lived for four years in India as an associated researcher at the French Institute of Pondicherry. She worked as Marie Sklodowska-Curie post-doctoral fellow (MSCA project GHost 101063407) in the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics from 2023-2024.

Ce livre met en contexte les « charmes » de l’Atharva Veda, tradition rituelle originaire du Nord-Ouest du sous-continent indien, à travers l’examen critique des notions de « magie », de poésie et de performativité habituellement mobilisées dans l’étude de ce Veda. La seconde partie de ce travail comporte une édition critique des quarante hymnes du livre 3 de la Paippalādasaṁhitā de l’Atharva Veda accompagnée de leur traduction en français et en anglais, et un commentaire détaillé de chaque hymne. Ce livre intéressera sanskritistes et chercheurs spécialistes de l’Asie du Sud mais également linguistes, ethnolinguistes et anthropologues.

Carmen S. Spiers est maître de conférences en sanskrit à Aix-Marseille Université et membre des laboratoire TDMAM (Aix) et GREI (Paris). Pendant et après le travail de sa thèse soutenue à l’École pratique des Hautes Études à Paris en 2020, elle a vécu quatre ans en Inde en étant associée à l’Institut Français de Pondichéry. Elle a travaillé comme chercheur post-doctoral Marie Sklodowska-Curie (MSCA projet GHost 101063407) à l’institut de linguistique (LUCL) de l’université de Leiden.
