Objectives

Polynology Lab Golden Jubilee

  • To provide an introduction to the basics - theory and practice of aspects of Geology, Ecology, and History & Archeology as applied to Paleoenvironmental reconstructions of southern (peninsular) India
  • To provide training in quantitative Palynology & Paleoecology

Course contents: with the geographical emphasis on southern peninsular India

  • Fundamentals of Paleoecology, Ecology & Palynology
  • Fundamentals of Applied Geology & Sedimentology
  • Fundamentals of South Indian prehistory and history, with an emphasis on archeology and epigraphy
  • Field, Laboratory & Microscopy protocols in Palynology
  • Introduction to software utilities in Palynological studies
  • Introduction to satellite remote sensing applications to study past landscapes

I ECOLOGY/PALEOECOLOGY

  • Vegetation and landcover in south (peninsular) India linked to climatic gradients
  • Pollen-vegetation relationships: How to interpret a palynological record?
  • Field methods and laboratory protocols in Paleoecological studies.
  • Introduction to Melissopalynology & Restoration Ecology

II GEOLOGY/ GEOMORPHOLOGY/ GEOCHRONOLOGY

  • Topography and soil cover in south (peninsular) India/ Geomorphological landscape of south India
  • The South Indian Terrain in terms of chronology

III HISTORY/PREHISTORY/ARCHEOLOGY

  • Introduction to human evolution and the prehistory of southern (peninsular) India
  • Introduction to the historical periods including the perspective of archeological and/or epigraphical site distribution
  • Introduction to satellite remote sensing applications to study past landscapes
