The talamuṟai (தலமுறை) arrangement of Tēvāram

The talamuṟai (தலமுறை) is one of the two possible orderings for global collections of the hymns of the Tēvāram, the other ordering being the paṇmuṟai (பண்முறை). When using talamuṟai, the enumeration of the hymns is subordinated to an enumeration of the 274 sites grouped in several subdivisions (defined by tradition), and ends up with a list of 48 potup patikam-s, that do not belong specifically to any site. As opposed to this, when using paṇmuṟai, the hymns of each of the Mūvar (மூவர்) are enumerated separately and each of these enumerations is subordinated to an enumeration of the musical modes. Although editions following talamuṟai are less popular than editions following paṇmuṟai, a good illustration of the talamuṟai can be found in the original manuscript of the English rendering of the Tēvāram hymns (by the late V.M.S. Ayyar), which has been included on this CD.

The various subdivisions defined by tradition are:

A possible method for experiencing the talamuṟai, is to follow the Virtual Pilgrimage links: these links appear on all the pages dedicated to the 274 traditional sites, standing on both sides of the site identifier on the first line after the title. The "Forwards" link goes from one site to the site which follows it in the talamuṟai, whereas the "Backwards" link goes from one site to the site which precedes it in the talamuṟai. For instance, kōlakkā (with identifier KV15) is preceded by kāḻi (with identifier KV14) and followed by puḷḷirukkuvēḷūr (with identifier KV16).

It must be added that the sites enumerated in the talamuṟai do not come in a random order: a pilgrim (or a virtual pilgrim), starting at site KV01 and following the talamuṟai upto VA1 will first move from East to West, across 14 different taluks, along the Kāvēri vaṭa karai (i.e. Northern half of the Kāvēri delta and Kāvēri Northern bank) until he reaches KV63. He will then start a West-East journey (from KT001 upto KT048), followed by a "zig-zag walk" (from KT049 upto KT127) and a "grand tour" (through the Southern parts and the Northern parts of Tamil Nadu) before heading towards the Himalaya.

A list of the 274 sites which are recognized by tradition (and of the 10 nāṭu to which they belong) is given below, following the order given in the Tiruppatikkōvai for the 274 traditional sites. For each site, we give the traditional name and the identifier. The identifier is a string consisting of 2 letters (KV, KT, IN, PA, MA, KO, NA, TO, TU or VA) followed by one or several digits, which is used in maps in order to indicate the sites.

Inside this list, HOWEVER, two additional sites have been included, which are given in the PIFI edition as piṟcērkkai: they are KT128 (viṭaivāy) and TO33 (kiḷiyaṉṉavūr).
