MURUGAPPA ĀGAMA-EDITING SCHOLARSHIP
11/04/2017

PROPOSAL FOR A 3-YEAR TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP IN  ĀGAMA-EDITING at the French Research Institutions in Pondicherry

The French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) and the Pondicherry Centre of the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) have been engaged in the critical editions and studies of the Śaiva Āgamas for some fifty years.  The French Institute of Pondicherry possesses a collection of nearly 10, 000 manuscripts (palm-leaf and paper) that was recognized by UNESCO in 2005 as a “Memory of the World” collection.  During the same period, some of these Saiva Agama-s have been critically edited and published on the basis of these manuscripts which were transmitted for many centuries only through hand-written copies.  All these manuscripts have been fully digitized and are available for consultation online.
As a further measure it is essential also to train the next generation of scholars in reading these ancient manuscripts. Many old texts are transmitted in several hand-written copies, each of which containing many differences due to damage, copying mistakes, muddled leaves or deliberate modifications. In order to work with these materials that are written in different scripts such as Grantha, Telugu, old Devanagari, Tigalari, Sharada, etc. intensive training is required.

Since the 1960s, this manuscript collection is being well maintained and critical editions of hitherto unpublished Śaiva texts such as the voluminous Mataṅgapārameśvarāgama, with a commentary of Rāmakaṇṭha the great tenth-century Kashmirian saiva philosopher, the four-volume Somaśambhupaddhati with French translation, the Ajitāgama and Rauravāgama have been brought out.

With the team of scholars at present we are planning to offer training for young scholars in this area. The scholar will work in entering a base-text into the computer, careful comparison and recording of different readings from the various manuscripts, the reconstruction of the original text from among the recorded readings and the preparation of a provisional translation into English or Tamil. He would also participate in discussions with the scholars of the IFP and EFEO presently working on Saiva literature (T. Ganesan, Deviprasad Mishra, Dominic Goodall, S.A.S. Sarma, and R. Sathyanarayanan) at periodical reading meetings.

We offer one scholarship to an enterprising young candidate at the rate of Rs. 25,000 per month for 3 years.

Interested candidates may send their CV (Bio-data) either by post:
