Workshop: Predicting species potential distributions from incomplete spatial data

31st August to 1 September 2006

Home > News > Seminars & Events

Scope of the workshop

Rarely are available data sufficient to permit the delineation of geographical / ecological distribution of a species all over an area of interest. Thus models are used to interpolate, or extrapolate beyond the locations where species presence is known, by relating species presence to spatialized environmental. Very often, at broad scale, available information consists of ’presence-only’ data, for which there is only recorded observations of the species with no exhaustive and/or reliable information on where the species in not found. Since, this type of data originating from atlases, herbarium records or sparse plot sampling is widespread and particularly challenging, it deserves emphasis regarding the applicability of available algorithms and softwares.

The idea of this workshop organized on two days is to have one part devoted to lectures/ debates and one part letting time to compare different methods/softwares with respect to a small number of reference datasets.

Programme Schedule

First Day - Thursday 31/08/06:

09:45 P. Couteron (IFP): introduction to the topic
10:00 K. Anupama (IFP): data from the collection of pollen-records
