February 6 Prof. Jacques LAUTMAN, ex-Director of the Department of Human and Social Sciences at the French National Agency for Research (CNRS), visited the Institute along with Mrs. Laurence COUTROT, research engineer at the CNRS. They showed much interest to the projects undertaken in each department, and praised the Institute for making this work known to the general public through its active communication policy.
Department of Indology
June 16 Twenty Jain monks (10 male and 10 female) and ten local Jain community members, led by Mr. Hukimachand JAIN, visited the Institute. They were given a presentation of the activities of the Indology Department and shown some of the unique manuscript and photographic collections of the Institute by Dr. Deviprasad MISHRA, Dr. MURUGESAN S., and Pandit SAMBANDAN S.
May 6 Dr. Srnivasa VARAKHEDI, Director of the Sahitya Academy, Osmania University, Hyderabad, visited the Institute on 6th May 2009. Dr. S. Lakshmi Narasimham presented him some of the activities of the Indology Department, and he met with the IFP Director, Prof. Vêlayoudom MARIMOUTOU.
January 1 J. VARDARAJAN joined the project from January 1 to May 31, 2009, to work on different aspects of the cataloguing and preservation of manuscripts, under the supervision of Dr. T. GANESAN.
January 9 Prof. Intira Viswanathan PETERSON, David B. Truman professor of Asian Studies at Mount Holyoke college and scholar of Tamil and Sanskrit classical literature, visited the IFP and held discussions with KANNAN.M.
Department of Ecology
January 12 Théo FLAVENOT, student with a certificate in general agronomy from AgroParisTech, France, joined the Dynamics of Forest Diversity project, as a trainee, from January 12 to July 10, 2009, to work on the estimation of organic biomass stored in the forests of the Western Ghats, under the supervision of Dr. Raphaël PELISSIER.
May 3 Jeremy VENDÉ, Masters student in “Forest, Nature and Society” from AgroParisTech-ENGREF, France, joined the project from May 3, 2009 to October 15, 2009, as a trainee, to work on the Responses of local actors to public conservation policies: The example of rights on trees, in the coffee agro-forest systems of the Western Ghats of India under the supervision of Dr. Claude GARCIA.
January 11 Kathryn DEMPS, Ph.D candidate from the University of California in Davis, joined the project from January 11 to December 1, 2009, to work on the transmission of ecological knowledge in South India, under the supervision of Dr. Claude GARCIA.
Department of Social Sciences
June 20 Mathilde LEBRAND, student from the Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Administration Économique (ENSAE) ParisTech, France, joined the Institute, from June 20 to September 18, 2009, as a trainee, to work on the relations between real and financial spheres, under the supervision of Prof. Vêlayoudom MARIMOUTOU.
May 19 Dr. Eric DENIS joined the Institute on May 19, 2009, as a Researcher, and new head of the Social Sciences Department. He was previously "Chargé de recherche de 1ère classe" at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), at the Mixed Research Unit 7135 “Societies in development, in space and in time”, University Paris 7, Denis Diderot, France.
June 1 Sébastien MICHIELS, Masters 2 student in « Development Economics » at the University Montesquieu, Bordeaux IV, France, joined the programme, as a trainee, from June 1, 2009 to September 4, 2009, working under the supervision of Dr. Isabelle GUÉRIN.
January 27 Krystelle BETAT, Master 1 in Geography student from the University of Bordeaux III, France, joined the project from January 27 to April 28, 2009, as a trainee, to work on Medical tourism and the role of ayurvedic medicine under the supervision of Dr. Laurent PORDIE.
June 17 Soraya DODAT, Master 2 student in Information and Communication, Management and Intercultural Communication from the Sorbonne University –CELSA, Paris, France, joined the project, from June 17 to August 12, 2009, as a trainee, to work on Water conflicts in Kerala, under the supervision of Dr. Eric DENIS.
Laboratory of Applied Informatics and Geomatics
April 9 Damien LÉCOLE, software engineer from the Technological University of Compiègne, France, joined the IFP as an International Civil Volunteer (VCI) from April 9, 2009 to February 28, 2010. He is assigned to the LAIG and will be working on Webmapping applications, notably in the framework of the Shiva project, as well as on the development of other computer applications.
April 1 Quentin RENARD, bio-engineer from the University of Gembloux, Belgium, joined the IFP as an International Civil Volunteer (VCI) for a one year duration, starting from April 1st, 2009. He had previously joined the Dynamics of Forest Diversity project from 1st June to 30th September, 2008, to study cases of forest fires in the Western Ghats.
January 27 Julien BORDAGI, Master 1 in Geography student from the University of Bordeaux III, France, joined the project from January 27 to April 25, 2009, as a trainee, to work on Comparative approach of urbanization between Kerala and Tamil Nadu under the supervision of Dr. Frédéric BORNE.
January 27 Pauline GIROD, Master 1 in Geography student from the University of Bordeaux III, France, joined the project from January 27 to April 25, 2009, as a trainee, to work on the Process of decongestion and urban planning (Chennai & Maramalai Nagar) under the supervision of Dr. Frédéric BORNE.

March 9 Isabelle PELISSIER, Post graduate Degree holder in Management of Information Systems and Organizations, joined the Institute part time, from March 9 to April 30th, 2009, to work on the reorganization of services planned by the Institute in 2009, under the supervision of the Director, Velayoudom MARIMOUTOU.
January 28 Raphaël TIPAKA who has a Master Pro degree in conception and setup of projects, joined the Secretariat General from January 28 to May 15, 2009, to work on the reorganisation of administrative archives, under the supervision of Yvan PRIKHODIKO.
