December 29 Dr. S. MOHAN, Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and Dr. L. VIJAYARAGHAVAN, Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the same, met the director, Dr. Jean-Pierre MULLER, along with two other colleagues, to discuss on the practical details for the organisation of a workshop scheduled for February 24, 2007, which would be held at the IFP, and which would deal with "After Tsunami : lessons learnt and future strategies".

November 30 Prof. Jacques FONTANEL, Vice President in charge of the International Relations Division of the University Pierre Mendès France, Grenoble 2, France, and Mrs. Christiane KERIEL, Vice-President of the Administrative Council of the University Joseph Fourrier,Grenoble 1, met the Director, Dr. Jean-Pierre MULLER in the framework of a mission led by the University in the month of November, to develop academic cooperation with Indian Institutions. They visited the Institute and discussed among other things the role that the FIP could play in this cooperative network, as well as in the exchange of students (see photo).

November 29 Mr. Jean-François POLO, Director of the International Relations division of the Institute of Political Sciences (IEP) of Rennes, France, visited the Institute and discussed with the Director, Dr. Jean-Pierre MULLER possible academic partnership between the FIP and his Institute. They also discussed on the possibility of sending students from the IEP Rennes, to do training or a Masters level research at the FIP, as had been done with other French research institutes abroad.

November 28 A group of 15 members from the Association "Les Comptoirs de l’Inde" led by Mr. Douglas GRESSIEUX visited the Institute this year again. Dr. Jean DELOCHE gave them detailed explanations on the permanent exhibitions that are held at the Institute, on the Old Pondicherry (1673-1824) revisited. Dr.Pierre COUTERON then presented the highlights of the activity of the ecology department. They then met Ms. Anurupa NAIK, the Chief Librarian who presented them an overview of the rich collection of books, and publications of the Institute.

November 27 24 participants from the UGC - Academic Staff College of the Pondicherry University, visited the Institute in the framework of the "Third Refresher Course in Library and Information Science", which was held there from November 9 to November 29, 2006. The Chief Librarian, Ms. Anurupa NAIK gave them information on the rich collection of books and journals available at the Institute and spoke about the library’s LIBSYS software. The participants also visited the Institute’s manuscript collection and its photo archives.

November 6 Mrs. Jeanne-Marie DUREAU, retired Chief conservationist of the library and archives of the city of Lyon, France, was provided an extensive visit of the Institute by both the director, Dr. Jean-Pierre Muller and the Chief Librarian, Ms. Anurupa Naik. Mrs. Dureau expressed specific interest on the means to employ for proper conservation of the unique collection of Saiva Manuscripts of the Institute, and proposed to deinsecticize and fulmigate the palm leaves inscriptions, as a way to preserve them. Some further discussions are planned as to how to implement these proposals and proceed to digitizing the manuscript collection.

October 2 57 students of M.Sc and B.Sc levels, from the Saint Mary’s College of Tuticorin, department of Botany, visited the Institute. They were given detailed explanations of the projects undertaken in the Ecology department, by Dr. Pierre Couteron, Head of the department , Mr. Aravaji, research assistant at the IFP , and Mr Balasubramanian, Systems Administrator of the IFP . They then proceeded to a visit of the other departments of the IFP, where Mr.Muthusankar of the Geomatics Lab presented them concrete applications of the use of new information technologies to ecology.

May 16 Dr Madhav GOVIND, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Studies in Science Policy, Jawaharlal Nehru University at New Delhi, met Dr. Laurent PORDIE to discuss possible collaborations between the IFP and the Centre. He suggested that, as a first step, researchers from the IFP could hold some conferences at JNU, to initiate the collaboration.

February 24 A group of students from the Department of Population Studies, of the Sri Venkateswara University of Tirupati, visited the Institute accompanied by their Professor, Dr.M. Ubaidullah. They were particularly interested by the projects in Social Sciences dealing with the interaction of societies with their environment and with the economy.

February 17 Prof Alain SOUPIOT, from the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, and member of the Institut Universitaire de France, met the director in order to dicuss a project proposal for the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Studies North/South in Nantes, France.

January 13 12 students from the "Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maitres" of the Reunion Island, visited the IFP, with regards to their dissertation on the fiftieth anniversary of french retrocession in India.The students, who were led by Mr LARZUL, Director of the Primary section of the Lycée, showed considerable interest to the activities undergone at the Institute, and were particularly awed at the unique collection of manuscripts on palm leaves of the IFP.

January 13 Dr Michaël de SAINT-CHERON, researcher at the UMR "Writings of modernity" (University Paris 3 & CNRS) met the director of the Institute, to discuss of a manifestation project on the theme of " 150 years of transmission of francophone and french culture with India",which he would like to organize on the occasion of the jubilee of the University of Madras, and to which he would like the IFP to associate.

Department of Ecology

December 8 Raphaël PELISSIER, researcher from the IRD-Amap, France, and partner to the Ordybio project, came to the Institute till December 21, to provide a follow-up on the project and as the co-supervisor of the thesis of Cécile MADELAINE, PhD candidate at the IFP.

October 25 Cécile MADELAINE, Ph.D candidate from the University of Montpellier II -Agro.M, France, joined the project from October 25, 2006, for a 3-year period, to work on the "Three-dimensional modeling of the dynamics of tropical heterogeneous forest tree populations" under the supervision of Dr. Pierre COUTERON.

September 15 Champak BEERAVOLU REDDY, joined the project for a "pre-doctoral" training, from September 15, 2006 to November 11, 2006, and to work on "The spatial models in ecology", under the supervision of Dr. Pierre COUTERON.

August 24 Nicolas BARBIER, Researcher from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, and post doctoral fellow from the Oxford University Centre for the Environment (OUCE) joined the project from August 24,2006 to September 12, 2006, as a visiting researcher, to work on the "Self-organization of semi-arid vegetation / Spectral characterization of rainforest canopies" under the supervision of Dr. Pierre COUTERON. He also came to participate in the seminar on Predicting species potential distributions from incomplete data organized by the Ecology department, and to evaluate the possibilities for collaboration between the IFP and the OUCE in the field of study of humid tropical forests.

August 20 Vincent DEBLAUWE, PhD candidate from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (U.L.B), Belgium, joined the project from August 20, 2006 to September 12, 2006, as part of a scientific exchange with the IFP, to work on the "statistical tools for prediction of species and vegetation types distributions from environmental variables" under the supervision of Dr.Pierre COUTERON.

July 17 Bruno POTIN, student in Forest Management (ENGREF, France), joined the project from July 17, 2006 to August 12, 2006, as a trainee, to work on the "Synthesis of the results on the growth of forest species of mid-altitude in the Western Ghats of Karnataka" under the supervision of Drs Pierre COUTERON and B.R. RAMESH.

May 19 FU SHILUN, student with a Master Degree in Engineering from Beijing University, joined the Ordybio project from May 19 to August 17, as a trainee, to design a "toolbox for multidimensional statistics" for the Scilab open-source software, under the supervision of Dr Pierre COUTERON and in the framework of a joined project between IFP and the Sino-French Laboratory in automatics, informatics, and applied mathematics (LIAMA) of Beijing.

February 15 Karine BELNA, student with a diploma in general agronomy from Institut National d’Agronomie, Paris Grignon, France, joined the department from February 15, 2006 to July 20, 2006 to work on her project "Analysis of ecological data of Karnataka, under the supervision of Dr Pierre COUTERON.

January 1 Francois MUNOZ, Post doctoral student, and Engineer from both Centrale and ENGREF school, France, joined the department from January 1,2006 to September 30,2006 to work on his research subject: “Metapopulation dynamics and diversity patterns”, under the supervision of Dr. Pierre Couteron.

September 4 Dr. Claude GARCIA, Researcher from CIRAD - Forêt, joined the Ecology Department as an associated researcher, in charge of the BIODIVALLOC project, from September 4, 2006 for a period of 3 years, to work on the "Management of biodiversity in the forests and agroforests of the Western ghats" and more specifically on the "study of coffee plantation landscapes" in synergy with the related projects of the department .

July 3 Franck JABOT, Engineer from Ecole Polytechnique, France, and completing an Engineer degree in ENGREF, France, joined the project from July 3, 2006 to August 31, 2006, to contribute to the study undertaken by the IFP on the management plan of "Bio-reserves of Agasthyamalai", under the supervision of Dr Pierre COUTERON.

February 13 Dr Marie-Christine CORMIER-SALEM from IRD -MNHN and Dr Claude GARCIA from Cirad-forêt, visited the Institute for 3 days and gave a lecture explaining the BIODIVALLOC project of the National Research Agency, France.

February 8 Nicolas De CALUWE, Masters in Biology from University of Brussels (ULB), joined the department from February 8, 2006 to July 8, 2006, to work on his title of research "Retroaction between forest fire and dynamic of reeds", under the supervision of Dr. Pierre COUTERON.

January 6 Dr A.GIRIRAJ, formerly from National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), Hyderabad, joined the department from January 6, 2006 to December 31,2006 to work on the Biodiversity and Landscape Ecology project, under the supervision of Dr Pierre couteron.

December 13 Dario DE FRANCESCHI, from the "History of the Earth" Department of the "National Museum of Natural History", France, came to the Institute till December 22, in order to evaluate the possibilities for collaboration with the IFP, on the projects Ordybio (Uppangala site), Biodiversity in Mountain Landscapes and Palaeoenvironments, with specific interest in the field of dendoclimatology.

September 11 R.PONNUCHAMY, from Madurai, India, joined the project from September 11, 2006 to January 11, 2007, as a trainee, to work on the "Herbaceous pollen markers study and herbaceous taxa in and around Madurai" under the supervision of Dr. K.ANUPAMA

June 1 SASIKALA.V, Masters in Science graduate from Madras University, joined the project from June 1, 2006, to September 30, 2006, to work on the microscopic studies of sediment pollens, under the framework of the project "Reconstruction of Palaeomonsoonal changes using sedimentary records from man-made tanks in south India" and under the supervision of Dr K.ANUPAMA.

January 6 A group of 12 students and 3 faculty, including Dr. David H. MILLER, Professor of Biology from Oberlin College USA, and Dr. Winfred THOMAS, American College Madurai, visited the French Institute on 6th January morning, as a part of their Winter Term programme in India this year, in order to get an orientation regarding the ecology, palaeoenvironments and landscapes of south India, through an introduction to some of our ongoing projects in the Ecology Department.

January 1 STEPHEN. A, botanist with a Masters in Science from Madras Christian College, joined the department from January 1, 2006 for a period of one year to work on his research project “Reconstruction of past environments of Eastern Ghats”, under the supervision of Dr Anupama.K.

Department of Indology

July 24 Dr Tim LUBIN, Affiliated Researcher from the Washington and Lee University, USA, and Head of the project "Brahmanical Culture in Ancient India" joined the department from July 24 to August 26, to pursue his research on Tamil inscriptions.

April 8 A group of 32 students from the M.S Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture,Bangalore, visited the Institute in the framework of a case study of the B Arch Curriculum. They showed considerable interest to the project on Urban Development of Pondicherry from 1673 to the Present Day.

June 16 Prof.Chelva KANAGANAYAGAM, Director , Centre for South Asian Studies, University of Toronto visited the Institute and discussed with the Director and Mr.Kannan regarding possible collaboration between the Institute and the University of Toronto and the launching of Tamil courses there.He agreed in principle to an MoU between the two institutions.

April 30 Gita V.PAI, Phd Student and Fulbright Scholar from University of California, Berkeley, joined the project from April 30, 2006 to December 31, 2006 to work on the Material Culture of the Nayaka Period, Thanjavur, under the supervision of Mr M.KANNAN.

March 15 J KALAICHELVI, M.Phil student from Pondicherry University, joined the department from March 15, 2006 to December 31, 2006 to work on her documentation training in Contemporary Tamil Documentation, under the supervision of Mr M.KANNAN.

February 20 Y.PRIYA, Ph.D student from Pondicherry University, joined the department from February 20, 2006 to February 28, 2007 to work on her documentation training in Contemporary Tamil Documentation, under the supervision of Mr M.KANNAN.

January 15 Prof MANI.A, from the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, visited the Institute for 2 days, and had discussions with Mr Kannan.M ,on possible collaboration with IFP indology projects.

January 18 Dr Agathe KELLER, Doctor in History of Mathematics, from the University Paris VII and researcher at the CNRS, France, joined the department from January 18, 2006 to February 14, 2006, to do field work with S.Babu on live mathematical practices in Tamil Nadu, in accordance with her field of study, Ethnomathematics.

November 16 Dr.Shanti PAPPU presented a project proposal to conduct regular workshops on archeology with special emphasis on multidisciplinary approach to pre history, in association with the programme – Historical Atlas of South India. Proposal was accepted in principle, it was decided that further discussions will be conducted with Dr.SUBBARAYALU, Dr.Yanni GUNNELL, Dr.ANUPAMA.K and Mr.KANNAN.M. It was agreed that Dr.Shanti PAPPU will prepare a budget and efforts will be made to look for possible sources for external funding.She will also cooperate with the Historical Atlas programme in the field of prehistory.

February 1 R Yamuna RANI, PhD scholar in Archeology, from University of Madras, joined the department from February 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006 to work on the IFP project “Historical Atlas of South India” under the supervision of Prof. Y. SUBBARAYALU.

March 20 G.S.V DATTATREYAMURTHY, researcher from Rashtriya Sanskrita Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, joined the department from March 20, 2006 to December 31, 2006 to work on his research title "Critical edition of Sukshmagama" under the supervision of Dr Francois GRIMAL.

January 31 Mr Anup Kumar DAS, Coordinator of the Shaiva Manuscripts of Pondicherry , visited the Institute, and showed considerable interest to the ongoing digitalisation of manuscripts undertaken by the Institute.

January 11 Trainees from the National Research Laboratory for Conservation and Cultural Heritage, Lucknow, undergoing a six month training in conservation of heritage objects such as, manuscripts (palm-leaf, cloth, birch-bark), metal images of antiquity, visited the Institute as part of their training, of visiting and learning from important museums, and manuscript libraries in India.They were shown the manuscript chamber and after a brief on our manuscript collection they visited our library which, they found very impressive.

Department of Social Sciences

December 1 Dr. Burton CLEETUS, Post Doctoral Fellow from the Jawaharlal Nehru University of New-Delhi, joined the project for a one-year period starting from December 1, 2006, to work on his research project titled "Institutionalisation of indigenous medicine in Kerala: problems and prospects" under the supervision of Dr. Laurent PORDIE.

November 20 Dr. Caterina GUENZI, Post doctorate from the School of Higher Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, Centre for Indian and South Asian Studies (CEIAS), France, joined the project, for a 2-year period ,to work on her research topic "Between texts and contexts. Scholarly traditions and local practices: the case of astrology" under the supervision of Dr. Laurent PORDIÉ.

October 9 Dr. Anne-Cécile HOYEZ, post-doctorate from the University of Rennes II, France, joined the project from October 9, 2006 to January 9, 2007, to work on her research topic "Diffusion and use of Homeopathy in South India", under the supervision of Dr. Laurent PORDIÉ.

September 25 Dr. Gabriele ALEX, Senior Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg, Germany, joined the project from September 25, 2006 to August 15, 2007 to work on "Healing practices and health explanatory models of the Narikorava (Vagri) in Tamil Nadu" under the supervision of Dr. Laurent PORDIÉ.

June 25 Alexis AVDEEFF, PhD candidate from EHESS- Centre of Anthroplogy, France, joined the project on June 25, 2006 to August 29, 2006, to work on his study of "Nadi Astrology", under the supervision of Dr Laurent PORDIÉ.

June 16 Yann LE GOATER, PhD candidate from Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales (IHEI), France, joined the project from June 16, 2006 to September 15, 2006, to work on his research topic "Recognizing traditional knowledge and promoting indigenous medicine in India" under the supervision of Dr Laurent PORDIÉ.

June 12 Dr. N. LALITHA, visited the IFP and discussed with the Director and the Head of Social Sciences Department, about collaboration with the Institute. Prof. Dr. N. Lalitha is an economist, Co-PI investigator with Laurent Pordié of a joint project on "Governance and the Institutionalisation of Healing". They discussed on the operational aspects of the project, to be conducted until December 2007.

April 1 Robin BURGI, B.A in Geography from University of Provence, France, joined the department from April 1, 2006 to June 20, 2006 to work on his project "Ayurvedic tourism in Kerala" under the supervision of Dr. Laurent PORDIÉ.

February 3 David IRIBARNEGARAY,Masters in Medical Anthropology, from University Paul Cézanne- CreCSS, joined the department from February 3, 2006 to May 1, 2006 to work on his research theme "Performing Art,Bodily techniques and traditional medicines in South India", under the supervision of Dr Laurent PORDIÉ.

January 16 Olivier SCHMITZ, Ph.D in Anthropology from the University of Louvain, Belgium, joined the department on January 16, 2006 for a period of two weeks, to work on his title of research “ Diffusion and adjustment of homeopathic medicine in India”, under the supervision of Dr Laurent PORDIÉ.

February 6 Marion DELPEU, PhD student in Anthropology, joined the IFP from February 2006 to January 2007 to work on AIDS orphan Care under the supervision of Dr Frederic BOURDIER.

August 4 Dr. Kamala MARIUS-GNANOU, lecturer at the University Michel de Montaigne, Bordeaux III, France, joined the CITADAIN project (Comparative Study in India and Middle East) from August 4, 2006 to August 28, 2006 to pursue her fieldwork studies.

February 9 R.VIJAYA joined the project as a data-entry typist, from February 9, 2006 to December 31, 2006, working under the supervision of Prof. Philippe CADENE.

February 6 Anaïs DAMAS, Masters I student in Geography, from the University of Paris VII, joined the department from February 6, 2006 to April 2, 2006 to work on her research title: “NGO’s and local elites: The case of small and medium towns in Tamil Nadu”, under the supervision of Prof Philippe CADENE.

February 5 Dr François MORICONI-EBRARD from University Paris VII, visited the Institute from February 5 to February 17, to continue the work on the Urban Dynamics project, “Economic Atlas of India”.

February 1 Adeline LEGROS, Masters I student in Geography, from the University of Bordeaux III, joined the department from February 1, 2006 to May 20, 2006, to work on her research title: “Evolution of feminine lifestyles of engineers”, under the supervision of Dr Kamala MARIUS-GNANOU.

February 1 Raphael TEULET Masters I student in Geography, from the University of Bordeaux III, joined the department from February 1, 2006 to May 1, 2006 to work on his research title: “The impact of development aid, on traditional organization of fishermen villages in Tamil Nadu, after the tsunami”, under the supervision of Dr Kamala MARIUS-GNANOU.

January 22 Prof Isabelle MILBERT from the Institut Universitaire d’Etudes sur le Développement (IUED), Geneva, Switzerland, visited the Institute for 3 days , and had in depth discussion with the director regarding future collaboration with the IFP in the framework of the "CITADAIN" project funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR).

January 20 Claire GAILLARDOU Masters I student in Geography, from the University of Bordeaux III, joined the department from January 20, 2006 to June 20, 2006 to work on her research title: “The development of transports in an urban periphery”, under the supervision of Dr Kamala MARIUS-GNANOU.

February 13 Prof Gerard SALEM, from University Paris X, France, visited the Institute for 3 days, and gave a lecture “From medical geography to the geography of health”, on February 13.He also followed up the work done by his PH.D student, Thomas SEYLER.

October 1 Marion MAIGNAN, Student from ENSAM, Higher National School of Agronomy in Montpellier, France, joined the project from October 1, 2006 to March 16, 2007, as a trainee, to work on "Indebtedness and microfinance" under the supervision of Dr. Marc ROESCH.

September 11 Hélène LEFEBVRE, student from the "Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Lille", France , joined the project from September 11, 2006 to June 11, 2007, as a trainee, to work on the "Analysis of the governance in an NGO: Between public policies and commitment" under the supervision of Dr. Marc ROESCH.

August 5- 8 Mr Romée LAMIELLE, Alexandre FOULT, Simon DE BEAUREGARD and Cyrille FLICHY, all students preparing entry for the ’Grandes Ecoles’ in Paris, members of the Microfinance International Development Organization (MIDO), came to the department to present and debate on the prospection they are undertaking for the account of a French NGO, ADELFI, in order to identify an Indian NGO as a partner for a microfinance project. The discussion was on the pertinence of this project and notably on the question of the necessity for professionalizing the microfinance sector.

August 4 Mrs Mathilde THEUBET, from the "Secours Populaire Français de Seine Maritime" (association for solidarity) visited the department to discuss on the studies led by the microfinance programme on the profitability of dairy farming, and more generally on the questions of indebtedness of populations and the risks of over-indebtedness through microfinance.

July 18 Mr and Mrs Roger WILDHABER from the PCTC (People ‘s Craft Training Center) NGO of Thurichapuram (Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu) visited the department to inquire on the potential for microfinance in developing income generators for the handicapped.

July 10 Annabel VANROOSE, Researcher from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel / Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, joined the project from July 10, 2006 to August 27, 2006 to conduct field work on her research topic related to the uneven development of the microfinance sector in India, under the supervision of Dr Marc ROESCH.

July 7 Marek HUDON, Research Fellow from the FNRS / Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, joined the project from July 7, 2006 to August 20, 2006 to conduct field research on microfinance in India under the supervision of Dr Marc ROESCH.

June 20 Dr.Shyama V.RAMANI, researcher from INRA, France, and specialist of indicator modeling, notably of millenium development goals indicators, visited the Institute on June 20. She specifically met the Director and Dr. Marc ROESCH to discuss on possible collaboration between teams working closest to the field and gathering data on poverty issues (IFP team and its partners) and teams working on the improvement of the millenium development goals indicators (INRA and its partners). Southern India seems to be a good field for this attempt. The reflection has been initiated and will be pursued in September.

June 6 Rémy DESPESSE, student from Sciences Politiques, Grenoble and affiliated to the EHESS, France, joined the project from June 6, 2006 to September 4, 2006 , as a trainee, to work on the study of federations of SHG, under the supervision of Dr Marc ROESCH.

April 25 Nicolas CAYON-GLAYERE, student from CNEARC, France, and engineer in tropical agronomy, joined the project from April 25, 2006 to October 24, 2006, as a trainee, to work on his study of the financial dimension of present-day farming dynamics, under the supervision of Dr. Marc ROESCH and Dr. Olivia AUBRIOT.

April 25 Ophélie HÉLIES, student from CNEARC, France, joined the department from April 25th, 2006 to October 11th, 2006 as a trainee, to work on the study of indebtedness, under the supervision of Dr. Marc ROESCH.

November 12 Dr. Pierre OLIVA, specialist in GIS and remote sensing from the department of geography of the University of Provence, France, collaborator to the Social Management of Water project, visited the IFP from 12th to 23rd November 2006. The aim of the project and the purpose of his visit were to build a geographical database of the Villupuram and Pondicherry regions, with a more specific application to the dynamics of water management.

June 12 Prof. PARTESARATHY visited the IFP and discussed with the Director and the Head of Social Sciences Department about possible collaboration with the Institute. Prof. Partesarathy is an Environmental economist, Director Designate of the Gujarat Institute of Development, who has worked extensively on water management. He therefore also met Dr. I. Prabhakar from the social management of water programme, at the IFP. Future collaboration is therefore planned.

May 22 David T. CHAKRAVARTHY joined the project as a project assistant, from May 22, 2006 to September 30, 2006, working under the supervision of Dr. Olivia AUBRIOT.

May 8 Olivier LEFEBVRE, student from CNEARC, France, and engineer in Science and Technology of Water, joined the project from May 8, 2006 to October 10, 2006, as a trainee, to work on water management dynamics, under the supervision of Dr. Olivia AUBRIOT.

November 30 Mr. Richard CANAL , Director of the "Institut de la Francophonie pour l’Informatique" (IFI - Institute of the French-speaking world for Informatics) at the "Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie" (University Agency for the French-speaking world) in Hanoi, Vietnam, visited the IFP and discussed with the Director, Dr Jean-Pierre Muller, and the Head of the Laboratory of Applied Informatics and Geomatics, Dr. Frédéric Borne, regarding a collaboration between both institutions in the framework of the creation of an "Informatic Network of Complex Systems" in Asia. A complex system is a representation of part of the real world thanks to a group of models and interdependent entities and for which it is hard to predict the behaviour. For the Institute, some of the Ecology department projects correspond to this description such as Ordybio or Carbon. Such a network would help exchanges with scientific partners from Vietnam and Thailand, as well as the CIRAD and the IRD from the French side.

November 2 Stéphane ROOS, joined the institute from November 2, 2006 to March 2, 2007, to work part-time as a software developer in the framework of the Fire Ecology project, and to contribute to developing tools and methods for calculation and processing of images in Matlab environment in C language, under the supervision of Dr. Frédéric BORNE and Dr. Pierre COUTERON.

June 7 K.ISWARIALAKSHMI, Software Developer from Pondicherry University, joined the department from June 7, 2006 to May 31, 2007 to work on development of database applications and web-oriented software including for the OSCAR and BIOTIK projects, under the supervision of Dr Frederic BORNE.

January 17 Evangelin Prabha AUGUSTIN, M.Sc in Computer Science from Pondicherry University, joined the department from January 17,2006 to May 31, 2006, to work on Texture Image Processing under the supervision of Dr Frederic Borne.

January 6 15 trainees from the Coimbatore Rangers Forest Officials, visited the Institute, and showed much interest to the activities undertook by the different Departments, with a specific focus on the latest technologies used by the Laboratory of Applied Informatics and Geomatics, as far as satellite imaging is concerned and its relevance to landscape analysis.

January 2 K.NANDAKUMARAN, Masters degree in Computer Application, joined the department from January 2, 2006 to June 30, 2006 to work on the OSCAR Weeds Identification project, under the supervision of Dr Frederic BORNE.
