Department of Ecology

September 28 Dr. Sylvie GUILLERME, Geographer from GEODE (Geographie de l’Environnement), University of Toulouse II, France and Dr. Christelle HINNEWINKEL, Lecturer in Geography, UFR Geographie et Amenagement – USTL, University of Lille I, France, visited the IFP. Potential areas of collaborations have been discussed with Dr. Pierre COUTERON, Head of the Department of Ecology.

July 15 AMRUTH M, doctoral student from School of Social Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, joined the department from July 15, 2005 till September 30, 2005 to work on the Landscape project (Management of biodiversity and natural resources at landscape scale) and to contribute to the final report under the supervision of Dr. B. R. RAMESH.

December 22-24 Prof A. K. SINGHVI,from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, visited the French Institute from 22nd to 24th Dec 2005 for discussions with the Palaleoenvironment team on the ongoing project. Future prospects for National level networking, collaboration and funding through a National Thrust programme on Palaeoclimates recently initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi (DST) were also discussed with the Director.

December 21 Dr. S. N. RAI, former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Karnataka Forest Department and current Advisor to the Ashoka Trust for Research and Environment, Bangalore, visited the IFP on 21st December 2005. Dr. RAI, as a Forester, has been following closely the research activities of the Ecology Department at the IFP since 3 decades and also participated in some of the research programmes in earlier years. >From the current visit, he learnt about the recent changes going on at the IFP, and showed keen interest in the projects on paleoenvironment, forest landscape managing, and agro forestry systems.

November 2-3 Dr. Kathleen D.MORRISON, Professor of Anthropology and Director, Center for International Studies, University of Chicago, USA and Mr Andrew M. BAUER, Ph.D Candidate, Department of Anthropology, University of Chicago, USA visited the Institute on November 2nd and 3rd to meet with scholars working on issues of regional paleoenvironments, archaeology, and history of southern India for a discussion of future collaborations between IFP and University of Chicago, USA.

June 3 Dr. Shanti PAPPU, Secretary, Sharma Centre for Heritage Education, Chennai & Pune, Drs. H. RAMAKRISHNA & P.R. REDDY, Professors at Palaleobotany-Palynology Lab, Department of Botany, P.G. College of Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad visited the Department on 3rd June 2005 for discussions on the project.

February 11 Dr. J. V. THOMAS, scientist from EOS Programme office, ISRO Headquarters, Bangalore visited the Department from February 11, 2005 to February 13, 2005 for discussions with the IFP project team on their ongoing collaborative project "Reconstruction of Palaeomonsoonal changes using sedimentary records from man made tanks in Southern India".

February 7 Shiny Mariam REHEL, M.Sc, project associate from Keystone Foundation, Kotagiri, Nilgiris was given a short training in basic and applied palynological techniques between February 7, 2005 to February 11, 2005 under the supervision of Dr. K. ANUPAMA and Mr. S. PRASAD.

January 17 M. TAMILSELVI, MSc student from Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Post Graduate Studies, Pondicherry joined the department from January 17, 2005 to April 15, 2005 and completed her masters project "Pollen Morphology of a Few Eastern Ghats Species" under the supervision of Dr. K. ANUPAMA.

January 1 N. SRIVALLI, MCA student from Pondicherry Engineering College joined the department on January 1, 2005 to work on her project "Computer aided application for calculation of foliar surface area" till June 30, 2005 under the supervision of Dr. K. ANUPAMA.

April 15 Patrick HEURET, Ph.D researcher from Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) - UMR (Joint Research Unit) AMAP, Montpellier, France, joined the department on April 15, 2005 to work in collaboration with Dr. P. COUTERON on the IFP project till May 2, 2005.

April 7 Raphael PELISSIER, Ph.D researcher from Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement (IRD) - UMR (Joint Research Unit) AMAP, Montpellier, France, joined the department on April 7, 2005 to work in collaboration with Dr. P. COUTERON on the IFP project till May 8, 2005.

May 2 Dr. AYYAPPAN N, Ph.D from the Salim Ali School of Ecology, University of Pondicherry, joined the department on May 2, 2005 to work on the IFP project under the supervision of Dr. B. R. RAMESH.

Department of Indology

December 20 Dr. Archana VENKATESAN and Dr.Layne LITTLE from South and Southeast Asian studies Centre, University of California at Berkeley, visited the Institute from December 20, 2005 to January 1, 2006 to dicuss with M.KANNAN on cooperation with reference to one more publication, and for a conference with the University of California at Berkeley in 2006.

August 31 Prof Evelyn Masilamani MEYER, researcher from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, visited the department from August 31, 2005 to September 30, 2005 to discuss on her project "Study of Tamil Dalit movements and literature" with M. KANNAN under the IFP project framework.

July 4 Jennifer Steele CLARE, Ph.D candidate from University of California, Berkeley, USA, joined the department from July 4, 2005 to August 12, 2005 to work on her research on history of Tamil commentary under the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Mr. M. KANNAN.

June 16 Animesh RAI, Ph.D candidate from Graduate Centre of the City University of New York, visited the department from June 16, 2005 to August 31, 2005 to work on his research "Creolization in the former French territories of India (1674-1954)" in the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Mr. N. KANNAN.

June 9 E. MANGAIVARATHAL, M.Phil trainee student from Pondicherry University and Annamalai University, joined the department from June 9, 2005 for six months to help in the documentation of contemporary tamil in the Library within the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Mr. N. KANNAN and Anurupa NAIK.

June 1 V. PRIYA, BA (Tamil), MLIS, trainee student from Pondicherry University, joined the department from June 1, 2005 for six months to help in the documentation of contemporary tamil in the Library within the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Mr. N. KANNAN and Anurupa NAIK.

May 15 Preetha MANI, Ph.D candidate from South and Southeast Asian Studies Centre, University of California, Berkeley visited the department from May 15, 2005 to June 15, 2005 to work on her research "Comparative literature, Hindi and Tamil" in the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Mr. N. KANNAN.

May 15 Sean KERR, Ph.D candidate from South and Southeast Asian Studies Centre, University of California, Berkeley visited the department from May 15, 2005 to June 15, 2005 to work on his research "Modern Tamil Literature" in the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Dr. N. KANNAN.

April 1 Senthil BABU, Ph.D student from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, joined the department from April 1, 2005 to work on his project "Anthropology of Mathematical Practices in Tamil Society" in the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Dr. N. KANNAN till April 2008.

September 5 R. SRILATHA, MCA candidate from Pondicherry Engineering College, joined the department from Sept 5, 2005 till Dec 31, 2005 to work on the IFP project “Historical Atlas of South India” under the supervision of Dr. Y. SUBBARAYALU.

June 1 Y. SUBBARAYALU, Ph.D, professor from Tamil University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu joined the department on June 1, 2005 for a period of three years to work on the IFP project as chief of project and coordinator in collaboration with the Laboratory of Geomatics and Applied Informatics.

July 3 Emilie AUSSANT, Ph.D candidate from University of Paris III, Sorbonne Nouvelle, France joined the department from July 3, 2005 till July 29, 2005 to work on her project in Sanskrit grammar under the supervision of Dr. Francois GRIMAL.

July 1 Rogelia MARQUES, Masters candidate from University of Paris III, Sorbonne Nouvelle, France joined the department from July 1, 2005 till July 31, 2005 to work on her project in Sanskrit poetics and grammar under the supervision of Dr. Francois GRIMAL.

December 16 Dr Karine LADRECH, from the University Paris IV, History of Arts Department, joined the department of Indology for a period of 6 months, from December 16,2005, to work on the CD ROM project, regarding the temple of Darasuram.

September 14 Mr. Robert KEMTER, Manager, Mr. Harry SPIERS and Mr. RAMACHANDRAN, both representatives of Muktabodha Indological Research Institute (MIRI), visited the IFP with Dominic GOODALL, EFEO, Pondicherry, in order to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) between IFP / EFEO and MIRI in India and the USA for publishing on the Web a catalogue of digital images of the the transcripts belonging to the Manuscript Collection of IFP.

July 1 Anil Kumar ACHARYA, M. Phil student from Pondicherry University joined the department July 1, 2005 for a period of six months to work for the cataloguing and preservation of manuscripts in the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Dr. Dominic GOODALL.

June 15 M.N. KRISHNAKUMAR, M. Phil student from Kamaraj University, Madurai, joined the department June 15, 2005 for a period of six months to work on manuscript survey in the framework of the IFP project under the supervision of Dr. T. GANESAN.

Department of Social Sciences

October 1 Hughes DUSAUSOIT, student from Catholic University of Louvain (U.C.L), France, joined the department from October 1, 2005 till December 31, 2005 to work on his research entitled "Epistemological approach of homeopathy in South India" under the framework of the IFP project.

October 1 Dr. Brigitte SEBASTIA, PhD from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Toulouse, France, joined the department as a post-doc from October 1, 2005 to work on her research entitled " Siddha (citta) medicine in Tamil Nadu: contemporary representations and practices" with Dr. Laurent PORDIE under the IFP project framework.

August 31 Chris FULLER, Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences visited the IFP. Potential areas of collaborations have been discussed.

July 28 Zoe E. HEADLEY, doctoral student from EHESS – CEIAS, Paris, France, joined the department from July 28, 2005 till August 25, 2005 to work on her project “Regimes of causality in the perception of afflictions”.

July 28 Remy DELAGE, Ph. D and research scholar from School of African and Asian Studies, London, joined the department from July 28, 2005 till August 25, 2005 to work on his project “Religion, Health and Environmentalism”.

July 11 Jessica Leigh HACKETT, M.A Anthropology from the University Paul Cezanne, Aix-en-Provence, France and Centre for Cooperative Research in Social Sciences (CCRSS), Pune, joined the department from July 11, 2005 to August 15, 2005 to work on her project “Transmission of Tradition, Knowledge & Techniques of Midwives of Rural Maharashtra: a study of the Social Dynamics surrounding Childbirth”.

July 2 Dr. Alan HAMILTON, Ph.D, plant conservationist from Plantlife International, UK visited the department from July 2, 2005 to July 5, 2005 to discuss on the conservation of medicinal plants with Dr. Laurent PORDIE.

June 19 Stephan KLOOS, Ph.D candidate in social anthropology from University of California in San Francisco and Berkeley joined the department from June 19, 2005 to June 25, 2005 to work on his project "Politics of morality in the global exchange of Tibetan pharmaceuticals".

June 13 Nilika MEHROTRA, Ph.D in social anthropology from Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University joined the department from June 13, 2005 to work on her project "Cultural conception and social management of disability" for a period of two weeks.

June 13 S.M. PATNAIK, Ph.D in social anthropology from Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi joined the department from June 13, 2005 to work on his project "Impact of tourism on the ecosystem of Nagaland" for a period of two weeks.

June 13 V. SUJATHA, Ph.D in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi joined the department for one month from June 13, 2005 to work on her project till July 11, 2005.

May 15 V. SUJATHA, Ph.D in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi joined the department from May 15, 2005 for two weeks to work on her project.

May 4 Calum BLAIKIE, programme director at the organization Nomad RSI, visited the Institute for a week from May 4, 2005.

April 30 Julien POGGIOLI, a master’s candidate in History at the University of Poitier, France joined the department from April 30, 2005 to work on "Diffusion and adjustment of homeopathy in India" till June 20, 2005.

March 4 Karma NAMGYAL and Tsewang GONBO from the Ladak Society for Traditional Medicines, Ladakh, Indian Himalayas, joined the department for one week from March 4, 2005.

February 10 Mihaela PAINA, Ph.D candidate in anthropology from University of Heidelberg, Germany joined the department from February 10, 2005 for two weeks to work on her project "Integration of Ayurveda in Kerala: An ethnography of a family-based clinic and factory".

February 3 Pascale HANCART-PETITET, Ph.D candidate from CReCSS, University Paul Cezanne, France joined the department from February 3, 2005 till June 10, 2005 to work on her research on "Variations in Childbirth in the Context of HIV/Aids in South India".

February 1 Frederic BOURDIER, anthropologist based in Cambodia and Research Fellow at the IRD, Taing YOUK LIN, research associate at the IRD-Cambodia visited the department from February 1, 2005 for 3 weeks and gave 2 lectures on Regional Health Programs.

February 1 Christoph EBERHARD, legal anthropologist from the Facultes Universitaires Saint Louis at Brussels, Belgium and researcher joined the department from Feb 1, 2005 for three months. His research concerns the logics of professionalization of Indian medicines as they pertain to regulations and legal mechanisms.

January 11 Gaelle VINCENT, a master’s candidate in Geography from University of Paris X Nanterre joined the department on January 11, 2005 to work on her project "Commercialisation of medicinal plants in Pondicherry" till April 9, 2005.

December 1 Rajaji SOMASSOUNDIROM, PhD (Geoeconomics) from the University of Paris VII - Denis Diderot, France, joined the department from December 1, 2005 till November 30, 2008 to work on his research title "Territories of Information Technologies – Regional Integration of Indian Meridional Metropolises”, under the supervision of Prof. Philippe CADENE

July 17 Linda BOUIFROU, Ph.D candidate from University of Paris 7 (SEDET), France and Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), New Delhi, joined the department from July 17, 2005 till July 28, 2005 to work on her project “Integration of slums into the global networks, the case of Delhi” under the supervision of Dr. Philippe CADENE.

July 15 Jeremy GRASSET, Masters candidate from University of Paris 7 (SEDET), France, joined the department from July 15, 2005 till July 21, 2005 to work on his project “Noida – entrepreneurial dynamics and internationalization” under the supervision of Dr. Philippe CADENE.

July 12 Philippe CADENE, professor of Geography at the University of Paris 7 and head of the project Urban Dynamics, joined the department from July 12, 2005 till August 16, 2005 .

July 4 Kamala Marius-GNANOU, associate professor at the University of Bordeaux 3 and UMR Ades -Tempos, France joined the department from July 4, 2005 to September 4, 2005 to supervise students working on their project "Periurbanisation of Chennai".

February 26 Philippe CADENE, professor of Geography at the University of Paris 7, joined the department for 3 weeks from February 26, 2005 to supervise students working in the project.

February 21 Kamala Marius-GNANOU, associate professor at the University of Bordeaux 3 and UMR Ades -Tempos, France joined the department from February 21, 2005 to March 14, 2005 to supervise students working on their project "Periurbanisation of Chennai".

February 3 Sarah JESU, a master’s candidate in Geography from University of Paris 7 joined the department on February 3, 2005 to work on her project "Local and International Tourism in Mamallapuram". till April 2, 2005.

November 20 Celina JAUZELON,PhD student in Anthropology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris, joined the department for a period of one year from November 20, 2005 onwards, to work on her research title “The actors of the Social Sector in India”, under the supervision of Dr Marc ROESCH.

May 30 Laure BURUS, a Master’s candidate in Political Science from the Institute of Political Sciences, Bordeaux, joined the department on 30 May, 2005 till September 24, 2005.

May 1 M. THANUJA, researcher (Ph.D submitted to University of Madras) joined the department for six months from May 1, 2005.

March 13 Robin ASSOUS, a master’s candidate in Political Sciences from the Institut d’Etude Politique, Paris joined the department for two months from March 13, 2005.

February 23 Marc ROESCH, from CIRAD-IRD, France, joined the department for six weeks from February 23, 2005 in order to prepare the follow up of the IFP project.

August 1 T. SUDHAKAR, civil engineer, joined the department as research assistant from Aug 1, 2005 till Dec 31, 2005 to work on the IFP project “Social Water Management” under the supervision of Olivia AUBRIOT.

August 17 P. Ignatius PRABHAKAR, Ph.D scholar from the University of Madras and anthropologist by profession, joined the department from August 17, 2005 to work on "Water user’s association and vulnerability" till December 31, 2005 with the coordination of Dr. Olivia AUBRIOT.

April 23 Lucille CAILLOT, a master’s candidate in Geography at the University of Lyon III, France joined the department from April 23, 2005 to work on "Water programme management" till September 1, 2005 with the coordination of Dr. Olivia AUBRIOT.

February 21 Olivia AUBRIOT, Agro-ethnologist and research fellow at the CNRS joined the department on deputation since February 21, 2005 for a period of three years. Her programme explores the management of irrigation in Tamilnadu: "Access to water and social vulnerability".

August 2 Prof Alice DESCLAUX from the Research Centre "Culture, Health and Societies" (CReCSS), University Paul Cezanne (Aix-Marseille, France) joined the department from August 2, 2005 till August 7, 2005 to make contacts, discuss and plan further research programmes at the Department of Social Sciences with Dr. Laurent PORDIE.

July 11 Dr. (Mrs.) Geetha KARTHIKEYAN, Ph. D research scholar from the University of Madras, joined the department from July 11, 2005 to July 14, 2005 to work on her project “HIV/AIDS Infection: A perceptual Study on Urban Women Commuters”.

February 15 Mary-Ashley OUVRIER, Ph.D candidate in Medical Anthropology from University of Aix Marseille / University of Rouen joined the department on February 15, 2005 to work on her project "Anthropological approach of mother to child transmission of HIV in Tamil Nadu" till August 30, 2005.

September 7 Thomas SEYLER, Ph.D candidate from University of Paris X, France, joined the department from Sept 7, 2005 till Sept 6, 2006 to work on his project "Disease Emergence in Chennai" under the supervision of Dr. Bernard MONDET.

December 5 Agathe GARENDEAU, Masters graduate from ENGREF,France, joined the department as a french “Civil Volunteer”, for a period of one year as of December 5,to work on software development for various applications, and spatial data management for GIS projects, under the supervision of Dr Frederic BORNE.

July 5 Dr. S. TOURAIVANE, Associate professor at the University of New Caledonia and researcher at IRD, visited IFP from July 5, 2005 to July 8, 2005 to make contacts, discuss and plan further research programmes at the Geomatics and Applied Informatics Laboratory with Dr. Danny LO SEEN.

June 8 Dr. L.P. JAYATISSA, researcher from University of Ruhuna, Matara, Sri Lanka joined the department on June 8, 2005 to carry out collaborative work on Mangrove Ecosystems with the Laboratory of Geomatics and Applied Informatics until June 30, 2005.

February 8 Thomas SEYLER, student of Economics from the University of Paris X, Nanterre joined the department on February 8, 2005 to work on his project entitled "GIS and vector-borne diseases" till May 15, 2005.
