Objectives

This two-day seminar on "Metropolitan Transition", coincides with the event of The Govt. Tamil Nadu Public Hearing of The Draft Master Plan of Chennai prepared by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. Also as a part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the SAP.

The Seminar on “Metropolitan Transition” will explore the current situation and the future prospects in terms of the urbanization pattern, land use, infrastructure, governance and socio-economic issues. These are considered as an enabling platform towards urban development and management by sharing experiences of experts and professionals in order to create a favorable environment for sustainable urban development of Chennai.

In particular, it will address the spatial planning tensions and synergies between the Urban Local Administration and State/Central Government. The multiple agencies including Local, State and Central agencies giving importance towards city development through capital intensive urban infrastructure development, preparation of investment oriented and project based City Development Plans (CDP) under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and public private partnerships and other Special Areas of Urban Development such as IT corridors, Techno Parks, New Corporate Townships in Chennai.

But the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) indulge in the making of the draft master plan of Chennai, now left with the people of the city to comment on the plan and give OK to the plan for implementation. This seminar will also address the major features of the Master plan the process of making public participation in the modification of plan and put into practice.

The objective of the Seminar is to contribute to the discussions on

  • Identification of issues in relation to the spatial planning and governance, and
  • To build and enhance the relationships between different stakeholders involved in the governance arena (public sector, private sector and civil society) ;
  • The seminar will also look at an opportunity to exchange experiences of various experts and professional and visions for the future of Chennai.
