Insights from the phylogenetic structure of plant communities

Application to Western Ghats - 8th April 2008

Abstract

Community phylogenetic structuring seeks association between the distribution of species within and among local communities and their position in the phylogeny. A key question is : Are species co-occuring within a site more (or less) related on average than species found in distinct sites ? A phylogenetic signal may result from ecological sorting and reveal the ecological gradients that are most significant in the evolution of species. The absence of a phylogenetic signal may indicate communities driven mostly by neutral processes. This approach is applied on the forest inventories from Western Ghats.
