Objectives
The final review meeting plus workshop of the Historical Atlas of South India project is organized at the French Institute of Pondicherry, Pondicherry on 4th, 5th and 6th of April 2008. This project was undertaken, with the financial support from the Ford Foundation and the French Institute of Pondicherry, during the last three years jointly by a team of historians, archaeologists, and specialists in Geographic Information Systems drawn from the Tamil University of Thanjavur, Mahatma Gandhi University of Kottayam, Mangalore University, Hyderabad University, and the French Institute of Pondicherry. The primary aim of the project was to prepare in digital form a historical atlas of entire South India from prehistoric times to 1600 CE. This Atlas is an innovating research product, which presents historical data with a geographical interface, which allows an original reading of historical databases. This data is made up of maps, photos, texts and illustrations that have been integrated in a GIS (Geographic Information System) after a bibliographic work on paper maps and a fieldwork with GPS (Global Positioning system) systems. The Historical digital Atlas is a new dynamic way of accessing historical information, either by theme, period of time, or by geographical zone. The first phase of the project is nearing completion with the mapping of the areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala states fully and one select (pilot) area each in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh using all the available archaeological and historical data. During the proposed meeting the Beta version of the DVD of the atlas is to be launched among a gathering of specialists in the field, for a critical evaluation of the product.
