February 19 Marie-Paule SERRE, Director of the Alliance française in Chennai, met the IFP Director, Dr. Jean-Pierre MULLER and the Head of the Ecology Department, Dr. Raphaël PELISSIER to discuss on how the IFP could contribute to a one-week event on the theme of water management and biodiversity, which will be organised at the Alliance française of Chennai in the month of April 2008. They envisaged, notably, of presenting the recently produced DVD by the IFP "Bittersweet waters", that deals with water management in South India, as well as the open source weed identification software developped by the IFP, named OSCAR.

April 1 S. Selvakumar and V.P. Yatees Kumar, two Ph.D candidates in Archeology from the Tamil University of Thanjavur, joined the project as Field Assistants from April 1, 2008 to May 31, 2008, to particpate in various works of the project under the supervision of Prof. SUBBARAYALU.
February 15 Dr. V. VEDACHALAM from Madurai, joined the project to work as an external researcher till March 15, 2008 under the supervision of Prof. SUBBARAYALU.
February 5 Sannyasin ARUMUGASWAMI and Sannyasin SENTHILNATHASWAMI. visited the Institute and were presented the manuscript collection by the Head of the EFEO Centre in Pondicherry, Dr. Dominic GOODALL. They took some photographs of the Yogajaagama and Candrajnaanaagama manuscripts and then discussed with the Director, Dr. Jean-Pierre MULLER, on possibilities for access to these manuscripts (see photo).
January 21 A small group of students from the Veda Agama Samskrutha Maha Pathasala situated in the Sri Sri Gurukul, Vedic Heritage Campus, Ved Vignan Maha Vidya Peetam, Bangalore led by their principal Sri. A.S. Sundaramurthy Sivam paid a visit to the French Institute. They expressed their desire to establish a fruitful collaboration between the Indology Department, French Institute and the Veda Agama Samskrutha Maha Pathasala, Bangalore. In that direction Sri. A.S. Sundaramurthy SIVAM held discussions with Prof. Bruno DAGENS, Pandit SAMBANDHAN and Dr. T. GANESAN. The team then met Mr. J-P. MULLER, the director French Institute. The Principal Sri. A.S. Sundaramurthy Sivam briefly mentioned to Mr. MULLER the possible plan of regular collaboration between the two institutions in future. The team then visited the Jean Filliozat Manuscript Room and avidly went through the manuscript collection (see photo).
February 4 Dr. Alexander DUBIANSKY, Professor of Tamil from the Moscow State University, Dr. Mouna GURU, Professor of fine Arts from the Eastern University, Mattakkalappu, Srilanka, and Dr. Chitralekha Mouna GURU, Professor of English from the same University, met with KANNAN.M to discuss matters related to the Contemporary Tamil culture programme.
January 16 Dr. Elisabeth SETHUPATHY, Professor of Tamil at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), Paris, came to the Institute for three days, and discussed with the Director, Dr. Jean-Pierre MULLER and KANNAN. M on possible formal collaboration between the Contemporary Tamil Culture Research programme of the IFP and the INALCO, Paris.
January 16 Prof. R.E. ASHER, Honorary Fellow from the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences of the University of Edinburgh, UK, came to the Institute to discuss with KANNAN.M and Prof SUBBARAYALU on aspects related to the programmes Contemporary Tamil Culture and Historical Atlas.
January 16 Prof. David BUCK from the Elizabethtown Community College, Elizabethtown, United States, came to the Institute to discuss with KANNAN.M about the translation of Dalit literature and about the Contemporary Tamil Culture programme.
February 11 A group from the “Franco-Indian Friendship of Franche-Comté” (AFIFC), France, came to the Institute, where Jean DELOCHE showed them his exhibition entitled Old Pondicherry (1673-1824) revisited which gives a comprehensive picture of the Urban Development of the town from 1673 to 1824.
July 3 Jean-Michel CREISMEAS, doctoral student at the University of Paris III, France, joined the Sukshmagama project team from July 3 to August 14, 2008, to work on activities related to the "ARCUS" project, under the supervision of Pandit S. SAMBANDAN.
March 24 G. Arun KUMAR and Anandha Ganesha PRASAD, both students from the Veda Agama Samskrutha Maha Patashala, Bangalore, joined the project as trainees, from March 24, to April 30, 2008 and then from June 2 to December 31, 2008, to carry out editing work of Sukshmagama under the supervision of Dr. T. GANESAN.

April 22 A group of 24 students of II.B.Sc (Forestry) level at the Forest College and Research Institute of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University visited the institute along with two of their staff members. They were presented the activities of the Ecology Department by Dr. B.R RAMESH and then those of the Geomatics Laboratory by Mr. MUTHUSANKAR, GIS Engineer.
February 4 A delegation from the French National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA), comprising of Mr. Bernard CHARPENTIER (Director of the Mission for International Relations of the INRA), Mr. Yves GRIVEAU (In-charge of the Asia&Pacific Mission for International Relations of the INRA), Mrs. Lucie CHEYNIER (INRA / CIRAD delegate in New Delhi for the development of cooperation with Indian institutions) and Mr. Pierre COUTERON (Research Director at the IRD and previous Head of the Ecology Department of the IFP) visited the Institute. They were given a general presentation of the activities at the IFP by the Director, Dr. Jean-Pierre MULLER, and then proceeded to a presentation by each Head of Department of the different projects led in their own Departments. Historical perspectives, current and future projects, partnerships were among the topics discussed. A visit to the Pondicherry University and to the Pondicherry Engineering College followed by a debriefing session at the IFP, concluded this visit. This visit was intended to prepare the coming one in March, of Guy RIBA, delegate Director General of the INRA for scientific programming and evaluation (see photo).
January 9 Lucie CHEYNIER, INRA / CIRAD delegate in New Delhi for the development of cooperation with Indian institutions, came to the Institute to meet Dr. Claude GARCIA, Dr. Frédéric BORNE and Dr. Marc ROESCH, researchers from the CIRAD appointed at the IFP. The objective was to take stock of the collaborations made with Indian researchers. She met at the same Dr. Raphaël PELISSIER, Head of the Ecology Department of the IFP and Dr. B.R. RAMESH, and discussed the coming visit of a delegation from the French National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA).
June 1 Quentin RENARD, Bio-Engineer from the University of Gembloux, Belgium, joined the project from June 1, 2008 to September 30, 2008 to study cases of forest fires in the Western Ghats, under the supervision of Dr. Raphaël PELISSIER.
March 10 Dilip VENUGOPAL, Assistant Engineer with an M.S in Ecology, joined the project from March 10, 2008 to August 9, 2008 to work on the Analysis of bioclimatic factors that influence plant biodiversity, under the supervision of Dr. Raphaël PELISSIER.
January 10 Gabriel HMIMINA, student in Agronomy from AgroParisTech, France, joined the project from January 10, 2008 to July 09, 2008, as a trainee, to work on the Architectural analysis of natural forest in western Ghâts of India, under the supervision of Dr. Rapahël PELISSIER.
April 1 Jennu KALLA M.G,joined the Managing Biodiversity in Mountain Landscapes project from April 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009, to participate in various works of the Ecology Department projects, as a Field Assistant, under the supervision of Dr. Claude GARCIA.
February 6 A. PRATHAP, joined the project to work as research assistants from February 6, 2008 to December 31, 2008, under the supervision of Dr. Claude GARCIA.
April 15 Dr. Lipi DAS, teacher and researcher at the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, Pondicherry, joined the project from April 15, 2008 to March 31, 2009, to work on the Melissopalynological approach to bee ecology with application to biodiversity restoration along with Dr. ANUPAMA.K. & PRASAD.S.
April 23 Dr Shonil BHAGWAT, researcher from the Oxford Long Term Ecology Lab (OXLEL), School of Geography, University of Oxford, visited the FIP during the last week of April (23 -30th) to explore future collaboration with the Palaeoenvironment team and made a brief presentation of his ongoing work in the Kodagu district of the Western Ghats on 25th April 2008.
April 15 Prayan Paramita MAHAPATRA, Ph.D candidate from the Department of Earth Sciences, Pondicherry University is affiliated to the project from April 15, 2008 to December 31, 2009, as part of the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in September 2006 between the IFP and the Pondicherry University, to carry out the palynological component of her ongoing Ph.D research titled Drill core analyses of the Cauvery Basin : Geochemistry and palaeoclimate studies, under the supervision of Dr. ANUPAMA.K

February 1 Damien BASQUE, student from the University of Bordeaux III, France , joined the project from February 1, 2008 to May 1, 2008, as a trainee, to work on Rurality versus urbanity in Tamil Nadu : the case of KanyaKumari district under the supervision of Dr. Kamala MARIUS-GNANOU.
February 1 Roman SIELER, Ph.D candidate from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, joined the project from February 1, 2008 to July 31, 2008 to work on The "vital spots"- ethnography of a South Indian healing tradition, under the supervision of Dr. Laurent PORDIE.
July 1 Dr. Thanuja MUMMIDI joined the “Rural microfinance and employment" project from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, to work on the finalization of a book submitted to the Oxford University Press, the organisation of field enquiries, the writing of articles, the organisation of seminars and the strengthening of partnerships with Indian Universities, under the supervision of Dr. Marc ROESCH.
July 1 PONNARASU S. joined the “Rural microfinance and employment" project from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, to carry out enquiries in rural areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other States of India, to process data and to organise seminars, under the supervision of Dr. Marc ROESCH.
January 2 Sylvain ROPITAL, Ph.D candidate from the “Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales”, France, joined the project from January 2 to December 31, 2008, to work on Globalisation, post 2004 Tsunami reconstruction, and differenciated dynamics of social change in the coastal villages of the District of Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, under the supervision of Dr. Marc ROESCH.
Laboratoire d’Informatique Appliquée et de Géomatique
May 12 Quentin GARDE, student in final year at the "Institut Supérieur de la Communication, de la Presse et de l’Audiovisuel" (ISCPA), France, joined the Laboratory from May 12, 2008 to July 25, 2008, as a trainee, to work on Corporate Communication-related activities, under the supervision of Anand PAKIAM and Dr. Frédéric BORNE.
Centre de Ressources Documentaires
February 6 Georges FRECHET, Conservator at the Avignon Library in France visited the Institute and met with the Chief Librarian, Ms. Anurupa NAIK who showed him the library and its online catalogue that enables entry and display of records in both Indian scripts and Roman transliteration. He also met Dr. Dominic GOODALL, Head of the Pondicherry Centre of the EFEO and Dr. Deviprasad MISHRA, member of the manuscript cataloguing team, who presented him the unique manuscript collection of the Institute.
Secrétariat Général
June 2 Manimarane RATTINOM joined the Institute to provide secretarial help, from June 2, 2008 to June 30, 2008, working under the supervision of the Secretary General, Yvan PRIKHODIKO.
June 2 Sivasankari DINANE joined the Institute as a multipurpose secretary at the Secretariat General, from June 2, 2008 to December 31, 2008, working under the supervision of the Secretary General, Yvan PRIKHODIKO.
March 24 Johnsy Olivia GREGOIRE, and Sophie LEBRILLANT, both 10th grade students at the French Lycée of Pondicherry, had joined the Institute from March 24, 2008 to April 11, 2008, as trainees, to learn about general accounting procedures, under the supervison of the Secretary General, Yvan PRIKHODIKO.
