Objectives
The Indian branch of BORDA (Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association) and the Consortium DEWATS (Decentralised Waste Water Treatment Systems Society ; CDD Society) are hosting the Annual BORDA Partners Network Meeting in Pondicherry from September 3-9, 2007.
BORDA has been working in India since 1979 with local Partners towards a sustainable alleviation of poverty and to confront environmental deterioration. This has been achieved through integrated activities in the technical, social and economic fields. Combination of environmentally appropriate technology and socio-economic measures makes the connection between environment and development. This development co-operation is guided by basic need services like water supply, electricity, improved living conditions and status, infrastructure facilities like housing, toilets, appropriate irrigation and cultivation methods, design and construction of wastewater treatment facilities and improving health and sanitation conditions. Approaches to these solutions are pursued with groups of the urban and rural population with the objective of sustainably improving their economic and social situation, which is as ecologically intact as possible.
The Meeting assesses the activities carried out by the -network members from all the Project areas in India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China as well as southern Africa and -also discusses main activities to be taken up by the Partners in the next year. Of particular interest would be quality management of basic needs services in sanitation and adopting quality management as a guiding principle for implementation of sanitation projects. Discussions will also be held on developing a framework for research with the aim of continually improving the performance of wastewater treatment systems being implemented by BORDA’s Partner Network. A framework for cost benefit analysis of project implementation is also on the agenda.
Programme
The programme is scheduled between 9.00-17.00 hours from September 3-6 and September 7-8. The agenda for the second meeting will feature preparation of the project programme and business plan for 2007-2010 as well as deliberations on specific regional strategies.
