A spatially implicit neutral model for studying forest tree diversity

Abstract

The neutral theory of biodiversity continues arousing a great interest in community ecology. However, robust estimations of the basic parameters of Hubbell’s spatially implicit model remains difficult and still hinder confrontation of the theory to real field data.

We propose here two simple and robust methods of estimation, which can be applied to a network of small sampling plots spread over space, a usual practice in forest ecology. Results from the application of these methods the study the forest tree diversity in 50 1-ha plots of Western Ghats of Karnataka are then presented.
