- Indian Cultural Knowledge and Heritage
The IFP shows interest to some of the key historical aspects of classical India, such as its religions, its literature, its languages (Sanskrit and Tamil) to better understand the foundations of modern India. Part of the documents (manuscripts, transcripts, photos) on which researchers of the IFP rely on for their studies, as well as several CD-ROMs (architectural and religious heritage, traditional hymns, historical atlas of south India) have been regrouped in this base: “Historical Atlas of south India”, “Pondicherry: Past and Present”, “Darasuram Temple”, “Saiva Mansucripts of the IFP”, “Tamil Saiva Hymns”, “Iconography of Shiva (Bhairava)” - Environment and Sustainable Development
The IFP carries ou research on biodiversity and takes special interest to the functioning of fragile ecosystems (forests, mangroves), by considering man as an important parameter in their evolution. The department has at its disposal in order to conduct researches, a herbarium and one of the most richest pollen banks in the world. This base presents original applications developed by the Institute: computer-aided identification (weed species, forest taxonomy, mangrove vegetation,…), atlas of endemic tree species of the Western Ghats, soil carbon pool estimates, agroforestry, online ecological maps (Webmapping). - Contemporary Social Dynamics
The IFP promotes research on major issues of society, and on the relations between human societies and their environment: social management of water, urban development, demographic tendencies and social mobility, microfinance, health problems due to the spread of transmittable diseases, etc.
