Workshop on social management of water in India

Home > News

Decentralisation and participative management are the keywords for the current reforms on water management in many countries throughout the world. In India, this essentially leads to the creation of formal Water Users’ Associations to manage irrigation through channels or tanks, an ancient irrigation system of pond-reservoirs.

The IFP organised on April 12, a workshop dealing with the social and cultural problems which arise from these associations with regards to already existing institutions, whether they concern villages, civil society in general or governments (central and regional).

Scholars from various disciplines and practitioners of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, shared their experiences. A list of social and cultural problems requiring further studies was drafted, and a collective thought on a methodology to give preference to, was engaged.
