Workshop on Medical and Wellness Tourism
Home > News

Health tourism is an increasingly important player in the global health economy, and in the transformation of the national health landscape in the host countries. However, trans-national healthcare received little anthropological attention to date. The workshop “Medical and Wellness Tourism: Studies from Asia and Europe”, which was held during the 6th Congress of the International Convention of Asian Scholars in, Korea, contributed in filling this void.
The workshop, co-organized by the French Institute of Pondicherry and the Cluster of Excellence ‘Asia and Europe’, University of Heidelberg, examined health tourism in four different contexts pertaining to India, Thailand and Germany. The participants studied the rise of neo-oriental spas in Europe and in Asia, as well as the transnational flows of medical patients from Europe to Asia and among Asian countries.
