Two days for a social critical debate on siddha medicine
Home > News

Siddha medicine, relatively unknown and often assimilated to Ayurveda, has rarely been studied in social sciences. This theme will be at the heart of the conference on “Siddha Medicine: Historical, Social and Medical perspectives” organized by the “Societies and medicines in South Asia” programme of the French Institute of Pondicherry.
On August 23 and 24, 2007, historians, anthropologists, sociologists and other economists will meet in order to debate on subjects intrinsic to siddha medicine. The image of the cittar, the representation of the body, the relation to Tamil identity and to ‘traditions’ sometimes reinvented, as well as the place of this medicine in the pluralistic medical landscape of India, are some of the themes that will feed the discussions. A joint publication gathering articles of the best communications is planned.
