Home > News

The IFP co-organized with the University of Berkeley (Tamil Chair), an international conference on “Relationship between Tamil and Sanskrit: Affinities and Oppositions” on Sept 12 to 14th 2007.

Unique event in the academic history of South Asia, seasoned scholars from Tamil Nadu and other countries, joined together to identify their problems, transcending sterile binary oppositions, and to discuss technically on the state of the art in the history of the first millennium, recent results in epigraphy, the role of Prakrit, a more regional approach to Sheldon Pollock’s (USA) vision of the ‘Sanskrit cosmopolis’, etc.

The fact that this conference is organized under the framework of the Contemporary Tamil Culture programme of the Institute, underlines the present day social relevance of the topic beyond its political dimension, and emphasizes the fusion found in literature, and bears testimony to the open ended holistic approach the French Institute of Pondicherry has brought to Indology studies.
