Home > News

A two-day international seminar on “Methodology and Tamil Studies for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Researchers” was jointly organized by the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) and the Tamil Chair of the University of California at Berkeley, and held at the IFP on August 12th to 13th 2009.
The seminar was aimed at reviewing the different methodologies used to approach Tamil literature, culture and history, which vary greatly from one university to the next, and from one country to the other, thereby leaving students of Tamil often lost in a methodological soup.
This seminar brought together doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from Tamil Nadu universities and several American universities to discuss the methodologies used in their scholarship, and the strengths and limitations of these approaches. Prof Francois Gros, EPHE, Paris, Prof. David Buck, Elisabethtown, USA, Prof. Herman Tieken, Leiden University, moderated the discussion between the researchers.
