Launching of a multimedia application for identifying trees of the Western Ghats

The IFP officially launched the application that helps in identifying trees of the forests of the Western Ghats, on December 20, 2007, in Bangalore.

This application was developed in the framework of the BIOTIK project (Biodiversity Informatics and co-Operation in Taxonomy for Interactive shared Knowledge base) funded by the Asia IT&C programme and the European commission. The CIRAD (Centre of International Cooperation for Development), the National Herbarium of Leiden, the National University of Laos and the IFP, all participated in this initiative in the emerging field of informatics applied to the study of biological diversity.

This application will be put online (free access) on the website of the IFP in a few months time. The descriptive sheets of more than 600 species will be presented in English and in the languages of south India (Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil).
