The French Institute of Pondicherry partnered with the Institute for Advanced Studies (IEA, Paris) and the Centre d’Etudes de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud (CEIAS/CNRS/EHESS), France, in organising on May 20, 2008, a conference at the « Maison Suger » (Paris), on the theme « Medicine and religion in South Asia. At the crossroads between scholarly traditions and local practices ».
The seminar brought together anthropologists as well as specialists in classical textual sources – Sanskrit and Persian – in order to examine the way in which medical doctrines and religious traditions meet and interact in South Asia. The works presented were related to different bodies of knowledge such as Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine, demonology, Hindu astrology and Muslim onirology.
