BIOTIK identikit of the IFP wins the Manthan Award South Asia 2009

The 2009 Manthan Award South Asia went to the BIOTIK identikit developed by the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP).
The Manthan Award is an initiative in India to recognize the best practices in e-Content and Creativity. The award (www.manthanaward.org) was launched by Digital Empowerment Foundation in partnership with World Summit Award, Department of Information Technology, Govt. of India, Nokia Siemens Networks and various other stakeholders like civil society members, media and other similar organizations engaged in promoting digital content inclusiveness in the whole of South Asian nation states, for development.
The 2009 Manthan Award under the e-Science & Environment was given to BIOTIK application developed by the French Institute of Pondicherry and the UMR AMAP, Montpellier, France. The award was received in New Delhi on December 19, 2009, by Drs. BR Ramesh and N. Ayyappan.
The BIOTIK is a computer aided application, which facilitate users to identify evergreen tree species of the Western Ghats of India and also provides a resume of botanical and ecological description in local languages besides English. The application caters to a wide range of users like students and researchers who can use it as a self-learning tool, foresters and para taxonomists as decision support system in forest management and conservation.
